Help! I’ve lost control.
When I got up this morning, I was well-prepared to have an organized day with the help of the Trello application. Alas, my day turned upside down when I took just a moment to check Discord and Twitter. Then one thing led to another, and before I knew it, I was reading articles about web3 topics like blockchain, dApps, NFTs, De-Fis, and more. What is said is that I lost two hours of my time that I should have been studying, doing my work, and yes, even doing chores.
I had, in a small way, become addicted to web3.
Houston, we have a problem here.
Incidentally, I don’t want you to fall into the same fate. According to Statista, “Nearly 77% believe that the metaverse “can cause serious harm to modern society,” per a recent survey from customer service platform Tidio. The survey, which received feedback from 1,000 participants, identified three major causes of anxiety related to the metaverse and its potentially negative social impacts: “addiction to a simulated reality” was the number one concern, followed by “privacy issues” and “mental health issues,” which were tied for second.”
Did you catch that? Your reaction to the metaverse could have negative effects on your life and your mental health. Let’s see how you can control yourself and not be driven over the edge. Sure, when you first started out, it was fun learning about web3. Because of all the opportunities that are out there, you get so excited that you want to read more (and more).
Social media woes can help you.
Work on priorities before you allow yourself to immerse yourself in blockchain topics.
Set a timer to start and stop your web3 activities on a schedule.
“Potter in Reader’s Digest Canada recognizes that social media is a very powerful force—powerful enough to make users lose all sense of time. To counter this, she suggests setting a time limit before scrolling through your various social media feeds. “Use an actual timer to indicate when your browsing time is up,” she says. “Otherwise it’s very easy to continue down the rabbit hole of information.” “No egg timer handy? Try setting a calendar reminder on your smartphone or desktop.”
Turn off “push notifications” from Discord and Twitter. I have trouble with this one. I really have to guard against immediately checking who said what.
I am handicapped and have a lot of pain in my legs, so I sit in a recliner with my feet up and work with the laptop resting on my lap. I force myself to get up and get away periodically (Of course, drinking a lot of water and beverages helps with that. 😜
Take care not to become so involved with web3 that you ignore real life with your family and friends.
Conclusion
You laugh and say that it won't happen to you. Web3 won't rule my life, you say. That's what you say now, but I can foresee that web3 is going to rule our lives even more than we anticipate. We need to be watchful against that - all of us.
